There's a lot of buzz around Montmorency Cherries & sleep. Several clinical trials1 have showcased the impact on insomnia when supplementing with this natural ingredient. But is this really an alternative to sleeping pills? And can it improve your sleep?
What are Montmorency Cherrys?
Montmorency cherries, the fruit of the Prunus cerasus tree, are a variety of sour cherry primarily grown in southwest Asia and Europe. They are valued for their nutritive value. For example, one serving of the juice of these cherries contains 20 times more vitamin A and 5 times more antioxidants than comparable amounts of the juice of sweet cherries.
They are also rich in melatonin (the hormone that regulates sleep), and contain tryptophan and anthocyanins, compounds that help the body synthesise melatonin and prolong its beneficial effects.
Do they really improve your sleep?
'Improving sleep' is quite a broad term. You could take a sleeping tablet which could increase sleep time but perhaps not deep sleep time. What we're interested in - is improving the quality of your sleep. One measurement for this in clinical trials is the "waking after sleep onset” subscale. This gives a good indication that the quality of your sleep improving.
This is where we've seen promising trials around Cherry supplementation.
Natural vs Pharmaceutical
We spend a lot time in our clinic working with clients to get the root of their health issues. Modern medicine can be a marvel but it's often aimed at treating symptoms. Zopiclone is often used for treating insomnia but some users experience lethargy during the day as a side effect.3
So when can find a natural, scientifically proven alternative - you often see a reduction in the side effects.
